Just what the title says.

The Ancient Romans were the first people to invent a carbonated non-alcoholic drink. It was called Agricola's drink, after its inventor Gnaeus Julius Agricola. That was eventually shortened to Agricola and then just cola. Although the recipe of the Roman drink has been lost to time, the name cola was revived with the invention of soft drinks in the late 19th century.

Cola is a corruption of Kola, the original source for the caffeine in many of the patent medicines that later became soft drinks. The most notable of these is Coca-Cola, which would have lost its lovely illiteration if it had used the accepted spelling of this nut.

The use of Kola nuts as a stimulant can be seen in fiction such as "Things Fall Apart", by Chinua Achebe, and "Tears of the Sun".
